SOMETIMES IT IS JUST TOO LATE TO SAVE LIVES

Unfortunately, sometimes it is just not possible to save the horses we come across in our often distressing work.

Teddy was rescued from a garage, while his owners moved house.  He was in an appalling condition, and was severely emaciated.  The paper boy had been feeding him dog biscuits and handfuls of grass.  This pony had once been a top county show winner, he was a sweet and gentle pony who loved you back.  Sadly however, Teddy was beyond H.A.C.K.'s help and after being at the sanctuary for only two weeks, he was gently put to sleep.  Teddy had been literally starved to death.  The vets bills had amounted to £800.  This case is far too distressing to go into too much detail.  But a lack of dental care throughout his life had been a great contribution to his death.

K, an Arab stallion that had earned his owners alot of money in the past, was turned away into a field to fend for himself in old age, when no longer considered useful.  There was no field shelter, no rugs and no feed.  When he was found by H.A.C.K. he suffered severe rainscald along his back, he was emaciated and dirty.  This once superb stallion was beyond the help of H.A.C.K. and had to be destroyed.

Lulu was an injured racehorse in desperate need of help when she came to the attention of H.A.C.K.  A two year old thoroughbred, Lulu should have been in the prime of her fitness but instead she was found after suffering a serious head injury and she had lost most of her hearing and eyesight. She could not balance properly due to the injury.  Her owners were recommended to have her put down by the vet, but instead they decided to put her in a field and she was left to take care of herself.  Lulu had become deaf and blind in one eye, her feet had become overgrown and she suffered rainscald (a fungus infection that causes sores along her back due to weather conditions).  She came to H.A.C.K. who gave her her last good summer.  She had her feet looked after, she was groomed every day, she was cosseted like any racehorse should be.  But sadly Lulu's condition became worse and she found it was difficult to balance herself, so it was decided that Lulu should be put to sleep before the winter set in.  The cause of Lulu's condition was thought to have been bleeding in the brain, but we cannot be sure.
